It’s a New Year and a lot of good stuff is going on, read all about it in The Best of January 2020.
Have you ever had a month that went by slow and fast all at the same time? That’s how January has been for me. It seems like forever since the beginning of the month but I still can’t believe we’re already wrapping January up. I’ve been busy working on things that got pushed aside during the holidays and trying to get ahead on others but there were some fun parts to the month, too. Here is The Best of January 2020.

Ringing in the New Year
Derek and I felt a little spoiled this New Year. For the first time in a long time he was actually off both New Year’s Eve and Day. We kept New Year’s Eve low key. We treated ourselves to breakfast out at First Watch. We ran a few errands before heading home to watch some of the movies we got for Christmas.
Dinner was at Chili’s because I had a hankering for a burger and they have some good ones. We then stopped at our favorite local place for a beer, Growler Grlz. We ended the evening at home watching the ball drop and toasting with Prosecco.

New Year’s Day we stayed in and rested. I made a traditional New Year’s Day meal with southern good luck dishes. Pork chops, black-eyed peas, and cabbage filled our plates along with some mashed potatoes and homemade apple sauce.
Family Visit
A couple of days later we were delighted that Derek’s sister, brother-in-law, and grandniece were able to stop in for a visit with us on their way home to Ohio from Florida. We spent much of our time enjoying each other’s company and some good food. I made sure to make some of their favorite dishes while they were here like potato casserole and chicken tacos.
Discovering Wegmans
This past Fall Wegmans Food Markets opened its very first North Carolina location in Raleigh. Derek and I had to make a special trip to Costco in Raleigh this month and it just happened to be on the same street as the new Wegmans. We decided to check it out and oh my goodness! I can’t believe it took me so long to head over there!

It’s amazing! The store is like a combination of Harris Teeter, Trader Joe’s, and Whole Foods on steroids! They have some very reasonably priced items especially in the produce section and some high-priced gourmet items like live lobsters and dry-aged steaks. Yep, they dry age the steaks in house!

What really caught our eyes was the specialty foods department. It’s enormous! Seriously, Whole Foods, eat your heart out! We perused their salad, fruit, and Asian bars. They have a sushi section, a coffee shop, a sub shop, and even a burger bar where you can order a burger and beer while doing your grocery shopping! What?!

Thankfully/Unfortunately, we ate lunch at Costco before stopping at Wegmans. We still grabbed a few items from the bakery that I just had to try. Derek tried their peanut butter dream bar and I grabbed a chocolate rugala. Both were delicious but what was really incredible is the chocolate-dipped chocolate chip cookie!

This cookie is what dreams are made of! The cookie itself is delicious but dipping it in chocolate takes it to a whole other level of yum! I hate that I didn’t get a picture but I was so excited to try it I forgot! Just take my word for it, if you ever find yourself at Wegmans definitely get the chocolate-dipped chocolate chip cookie if nothing else! You won’t regret it! My only regret is that it’s a half-hour trip to get there but thankfully about this time next year the new Chapel Hill location is supposed to be opening. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it’ll be on time!
Happy Birthday, Baby!
Yesterday was Derek’s 40th Birthday! I can’t believe my sweet, handsome hubby is 40 years old! This has been an important and busy week at the restaurant especially that he’s now the acting general manager! This is the next step he has to finish before completely taking over his own store. He’s been in the role for less than two weeks but he’s very determined to get things done! I’m so proud of him and all his hard work. I’m looking forward to next month when we celebrate this birthday in a big way on a week-long cruise!

That was The Best of January 2020! It feels like we’re going the right direction this New Year and I’m looking forward to February, especially vacay! May the next month be wonderful for you and your family, too!
