Let me tell you how my recent visit to the Woodwick Outlet Candle Store led me to get a dozen candles at a fraction of the retail price!
Do you have certain “things” that you like to have in your everyday life to bring a little extra joy? I’m not very materialistic but there are definitely a few items that I enjoy having around my house like fresh flowers, comfy blankets, and especially candles.
When Derek and I moved into our first apartment I would buy the budget-friendly glade candles on a regular basis. My favorite brand, Yankee Candle, was saved for special occasions. Derek would often treat me with them on my birthday and Christmas.
Several years ago during a New England vacation, I convinced my hubby to make a stop at the Yankee Candle Flagship Store in South Deerfield, Massachusetts on our way to Hartford from Boston. I almost felt like I was visiting Mecca. It’s definitely a must visit for Yankee Candle lovers.
Well, it almost seemed like Kismet that nearly ten years later we were on our way home from a day trip in the mountains. I noticed a sign for the Woodwick Outlet Candle Store in Blairs, Virginia. My curiosity was peaked and I got excited very quickly.

I received my first Woodwick candle quite a few years ago as a birthday gift from my sister-in-law. It was this delicious vanilla scent and I loved how the wooden wick snapped, crackled, and popped like a fireplace. We were living in Naples, Florida at the time and that candle was about as close to a real fireplace as I was going to get.
Woodwick is a part of the Yankee Candle Company. Like their sister company, Woodwick has a large variety of fantastically scented candles. There are a couple things about them that are different that make me like them better. The glass holders are a sleeker design and in my opinion a little more classy which my thirty-something self appreciates more than my twenty-something self.
The other thing is that I feel like I get a much more even burn from the candles. Could this be attributed to the sleeker design? I’m not sure but it’s definitely a point in Woodwick’s favor. Don’t get me wrong I still love Yankee Candle. I don’t exclusively shop Woodwick. Just ask Derek. I go absolutely gaga when I find a local candle shop when we’re traveling. It’s pretty much a guarantee that we’ll be going home with a candle. Or two!
Needless to say after we passed that sign a couple months ago I quickly did some research to find out exactly where Blairs, Virginia was and how far away. I was thrilled to find out that it’s about an hour and a half away from Durham. Talk about an easy roadtrip!
Derek and I finally made some time this past June to hop in the car and head to Virginia and shop for some candles. The drive is just over 60 miles but it’s mostly back roads which is why it takes a little longer to get there. One nice thing about back roads though is that it makes for a beautiful drive!
When we arrived we noticed a guard house that you have to pass. We just signaled to him that we were going to the outlet center which is on the immediate right and he quickly waved us on through.

The moment I walked through the front doors I was in awe over the rows of candles. What really got me excited was the prices. There are two sections in the store. The regular retail section is where the large candles go for about $25. The nearly perfect section is where the candles that aren’t quite perfect for retail are designated. The large candles sell for $9 but they do not come with the lids, those are extra. That’s not a big deal to me because half the time I end up leaving the lids off anyways. I can also reuse some old ones, too.

Now here’s the exciting part and why it’s worth a drive to the outlet center. The ENTIRE STORE is BUY ONE GET ONE FREE! That’s right essentially the candles are 50% off. The large retail candles are about $12.50 and the large nearly perfect candles are $4.50!

I bought mostly from the nearly perfect section but I did buy some candles from the retail section because it’s my favorite scent, Clean Rain. Which I, unfortunately, found out is being discontinued! I ended up buying the last two large candles and a couple of medium ones.

If I could’ve afforded to buy out the entire Clean Rain section I probably would have, I really do love it that much. I’m definitely not happy and I’m also confused as to why they would get rid of such a popular scent!

I also got some light and neutral scents for summertime. Linen, Calming Retreat, White Tea and Jasmine, and a Trilogy Candle made up of Tropical Oasis, Sand and Driftwood, and At the Beach scents. We also selected three Trilogy Candles filled with warm scents for the fall season.

Autumn, Apple Basket, and Mums is a new favorite that my hubby bought for me last year. As soon as he spotted it at the store in the reduced section he quickly snagged another one for me. Vanilla Bean, Caramel, and Biscotti makes me think of fall baking. The last Trilogy candle is Currant, Spiced Blackberry, and Black Cherry. It’s actually perfect for autumn and the holiday season so I’m glad it’s a big one!

I ended up buying a dozen candles! Eek! Six large and six medium candles that totaled less than $80! The sales ladies there were very kind and did an incredible job of boxing up all those candles. I knew that I was going to be getting my new candles home without any damage.

Blairs is a pretty small area but Danville is not too far away. We decided to head over there after our visit to Woodwick just to check the area out. Unfortunately, our GPS decided to get a little goofy. It took us a little longer to find Danville than it should have. As soon as we started to find our way, it started pouring down rain!
We decided to do a quick drive through and went downtown and saw some incredibly beautiful Victorian houses. We are definitely going to get an earlier start before our next trip so we can really explore Danville. I’m hoping next fall when the leaves are changing so we can appreciate that backroads drive even more.
A small additional perk to this daytrip is that gas is a little bit cheaper in Virginia. You know we made sure to fill up before we headed home!
This is a really great daytrip option for anyone that lives in the North Carolina Triangle and Piedmont areas. It’s also only an hour and a half away from Lynchburg, Virginia. I hope our trip to the Woodwick Outlet Candle Store has inspired a future daytrip for you the next time you need to stock up on candles!
